Southern Utah is packed with incredible views, open roads, and peaceful getaways. If you're heading to St. George or staying in one of our vacation homes nearby, you're in the perfect spot to take in some of the most scenic drives in the state. These routes are full of red rock cliffs, desert valleys, and views that make you want to pull over every few minutes.
Zion Park Scenic Byway (SR-9)
One of the most popular drives in the area, the Zion Park Scenic Byway winds through towns like Hurricane and Rockville on the way to Zion National Park. This route offers nonstop views and easy access to one of Utah’s most famous parks. The road cuts through canyons and climbs toward towering cliffs that glow at sunrise and sunset.
Fall brings golden leaves along the river, and spring gives you bright desert colors and flowing streams. If you want to explore Zion, this is the best way to get there. Even the drive alone is worth it.
Kolob Canyons Road
For a quieter drive with fewer cars, take the turnoff to Kolob Canyons. This road leads to a lesser-known section of Zion and stretches for just five miles, but the views are massive. Red rock walls rise straight out of the earth, and the air feels peaceful compared to busier park routes.
It’s a great place for a short outing or a relaxing lunch stop. The scenic overlooks give you a chance to pause and take in the quiet side of southern Utah.
Snow Canyon Parkway and SR-18
Right from downtown St. George, Snow Canyon Parkway leads into one of the area’s hidden gems: Snow Canyon State Park. Drive through lava fields and sandstone formations, then continue on SR-18 through high desert plateaus and small towns.
This route offers a great mix of unique landscapes and local charm. You’ll spot places to hike, stop for snacks, or just enjoy the view. Sunsets here light up the cliffs in every direction.
Scenic Byway 12
If you’re up for a full-day road trip, Scenic Byway 12 is one of the best routes in the entire state. While it starts farther northeast of St. George, many guests staying in our homes make the trip to see it. This road stretches between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef and passes by Grand Staircase-Escalante.
It’s a good pick if you want a change of scenery from red rocks to high mountain forests. Along the way, you’ll find wide open spaces and quiet towns that feel untouched by time.
Utah Route 59 and the Arizona Strip
For those looking for something off the main track, Utah Route 59 heads south past Apple Valley and into the Arizona Strip. The open desert here stretches out for miles, with colorful rock formations and skies that go on forever.
This road feels remote but rewarding. You won’t pass many services, so plan ahead, but the sense of solitude and space is worth the effort. It’s a great drive for photos, reflection, and quiet adventure.
