15 Epic Day Trips from St. George, Utah

St. George is your ultimate Southern Utah basecamp.

Surrounded by jaw-dropping red rock slot canyons and desert parks, St. George gives you easy access to some of the most incredible destinations in the southwest. With mild winters and sunshine nearly year-round, there’s never a bad time to hit the road.

No matter what you love, from scenic drives to hiking trails and state parks to sandy lakeshores, these day trips from St. George Utah are all about adventure and unforgettable views.

Zion National Park

Just 45 minutes from St. George, Zion National Park is a no-brainer. Known for its towering sandstone cliffs and epic hiking routes, this park is one of the most visited in the world. We recommend the Emerald Pool and Observation Pool hikes for those new to the park.

If you're looking for other fun options, don’t miss the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angel’s Landing (permit required), or the family-friendly Riverside Walk. Go early to beat the crowds and make sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Roughly two hours northeast sits Bryce Canyon, famous for its bizarre rock formations called hoodoos. Inspiration Point offers one of the best overlooks in the park. Even if you don't have time for a hike, the overlook offers a stunning view of the unique landscape, and it is well worth the drive.

Take the Petrified Dunes Trail or watch the sunset for a surreal experience. Make sure to bring layers; it’s at a higher elevation.

Snow Canyon State Park

Located just 20 minutes from downtown St. George, Snow Canyon State Park is a red rock playground. You’ll find some of the best short hiking trails in the region through lava flows and slot canyons.

We particularly love Jenny’s Canyon and the lava tubes. They are great family hikes, especially if you have smaller children or teens. This state park is a local favorite for a reason.

Sand Hollow State Park

If water sports are your thing, Sand Hollow is your spot. This state park offers a massive reservoir perfect for boating, paddleboarding, and fishing. It's an incredible spot in hot summer months.

With its red sand dunes, Sand Hollow also offers much more than water sports. If boating isn't your thing, check out the off-road trails and camping options. No matter what your group loves to do, Sand Hollow is a great spot to spend the day with friends or family.

Valley of Fire State Park

An hour south in Nevada, Valley of Fire State Park lives up to its name. You'll fall in love with the vibrant red rocks, and the petrified logs and ancient petroglyphs feel otherworldly.

Perfect for a cooler-season day trip, the park’s loop drive and short hikes, like Fire Wave, make it a must-see.

North Rim, Grand Canyon

About 2.5 hours from St. George, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is quieter and cooler than its southern sibling.

It’s only open from May to October, but it offers sweeping views and pine forests. Even though it's not as well-known as the South Rim, it's a fantastic place for photo ops. Try the Bright Angel Point Trail.

Cedar Breaks National Monument

This underrated gem is located just outside Cedar City and features colorful cliffs alongside high alpine meadows. Don't leave without enjoying the 10,000-ft elevation viewpoint!

It’s a great summer day trip for escaping the heat of the St. George area. Check for wildflowers in late June or early July.

Quail Creek State Park

Less crowded than Sand Hollow, Quail Creek is easily accessible and offers great opportunities for kayaking and fishing.

Pack a cooler and set up on the sandy shores for a peaceful afternoon. It’s just 25 minutes from St. George.

Kolob Canyons (Zion NP)

The lesser-known side of Zion National Park, Kolob Canyons, is located off Interstate 15 and offers peaceful hiking and breathtaking scenery.

The Timber Creek Overlook Trail offers big rewards for minimal effort. It's a perfect half-day outing.

Gunlock State Park

This small state park is renowned for its cascading waterfalls, particularly after a wet winter or spring. Even when dry, it’s a peaceful place to relax and enjoy nature.

It’s only about 30 minutes from St. George, making it a quick and easy getaway for water activities or quiet time.

Pine Valley

For pine trees and cooler air, head north to Pine Valley. You’ll find a charming mountain town, a historic chapel, and hiking trails through the pine-scented air.

A great pick during the warmer months to escape the heat without driving too far.

Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site

This archaeological site, located just south of the Utah-Arizona border, features hundreds of ancient petroglyphs carved into basalt boulders.

Unlike the parks, it’s free and rarely crowded. It's also unique because it offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the George Utah region.

Red Cliffs Desert Reserve

This protected area features desert wildlife and scenic trails just north of town. It's known for its biking trails and northern populations of the Desert Tortoise, Sidewinder, and Gila Monster. These animals are typically found in the hotter Mojave Desert, but you can get a glimpse in Utah at the Reserve.

We also recommend exploring the Babylon Arch Trail or the Cottonwood Canyon area for stunning views and a sense of solitude.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

A unique state park with miles of shifting sand dunes, perfect for photography, hiking, and ATV riding.

Located about 90 minutes from St. George, it’s worth the drive for the color and terrain alone.

Kanab, Utah

Known as “Little Hollywood,” Kanab is filled with old Western movie sets, cozy cafes, and access to nearby slot canyons, including Peek-A-Boo and Buckskin Gulch.

It’s also home to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a favorite destination for animal lovers.
