In general, if you plan to ski Alta Ski Area or nearby Snowbird, a vehicle is not necessary during your stay as ski buses are available every 20-30 minutes which take you to each resort and down the mountain to the park and ride. What makes Alta such a desirable place to ski is how close it is to the Salt Lake International Airport. You can get off the plane into a shuttle and be on the mountain within 45 minutes. Combine that with the amazing mountain views, proximity to Snowbird Resort a few miles down the mountain, the fantastic winter and summer recreation.

 

Ski Lodges at the Base of Alta

2. Alta Peruvian Lodge
Overview:
* Not ski-in/ski-out (however, there is a free shuttle that takes skiers to and from the base areas in about two minutes).
* Built in 1948, when two hospital barracks from the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah were trucked more than 100 miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon and deposited at the base of Peruvian Ridge.
* Considered the “guy’s lodge” as groups of men enjoy their annual ski trip here.
* Updated with a nice dining room and common area. The guest rooms are small, most sleeping only two people, with no room for a crib or roll away. There are some suites and adjoining rooms for families. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as Apres ski snacks are included.
* Great bar. Beer is served in heavy glasses, popcorn, a roaring fire. Ski memorabilia on the walls.
* Gorgeous views! Perfect place to enjoy after the lifts close.

3. Goldminer's Daughter Lodge
Founded in 1961 by Jim and Alfreda Shane who were long-time Alta skiers. Built on the site of a mining-era bar called the “Bucket of Blood,” the Shanes decided to name it after a different Alta bar, the Goldminer’s Daughter. As for its location, the Collins Express Lift is maybe 50 yards from the lodge, making this a great lodge for families of all ages who want to be as close to the lifts as possible.

Family-Friendly Ski Lodging at Alta

For kids, the Alta Lodge offers a kid's program for young children and a "kids stay free" promotion. Alta provides a AltaSkiResortsmall.jpgshuttle that takes small skiers to/from the ski school daily. The Apres ski program that includes arts/crafts, games, and sledding begins at 4:30 p.m. daily. The kid's dinner starts at 5:30 pm (however, kids are welcome to eat with their parents). Additional activities are provided following dinner. Kids ages 4-12 can stay and play until 8:15 pm. Kids younger than 4 can participate with a parent present.

Families love visiting Alta Ski Area because of the family-friendly environment on the mountain. Ski school for children is a great place to introduce your kids to skiing and snowboarding. One of the best ideas we recommend for families visiting Alta is to rent a large ski vacation home at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon. A large home can accommodate as many as 20-25 people comfortably with a movie theater, game room, toys for kids, and the ability to all be together. It is not easy to find ski lodging on the mountain that can accommodate large families.

Alta Community Information

Alta is tentatively scheduled to open November 21, 2014 permitting weather conditions.

2014/2015 Prices at Alta:

Alta's adult day ticket is $84, for beginners, the ticket is redeemable on Sunnyside, Albion, and Cecret lifts for $40. Children ages 12 and under are $45. Skiing after 3pm is available to anyone for only $10 (adults and children).

Planning to Visit Alta

Driving to Alta:

Alta Ski Area is conveniently located on State Highway 210 up Little Cottonwood Canyon approximately 25 miles southeast of the Salt Lake metro area. Distance from Salt Lake International Airport is approximately 32 miles with about 45 minutes total drive time. Ski buses are available from around many areas of Salt Lake valley that take you right to the base of Alta's lifts. You can also access the park and ride lot at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon to park your vehicle and take the ski bus to the ski area at Alta. The ski bus schedule times is convenient enough to allow skiers to enjoy a full day, morning or afternoon half-day of skiing.
